A PENSIONER was put into an induced coma after being hit by a car this lunchtime.

Greengate Street was closed for several hours in both directions and the pensioner, an 85-year-old Barrow woman, had to be released by firefighters after becoming trapped underneath the vehicle.

She was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by road accompanied by Great North Air Ambulance aircrew medics after suffering multiple injuries.

She was put into an induced coma by the Great North Air Ambulance paramedic and doctor team. She arrived at the hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The collision happened between the junctions with School Street and Allison Street.

The incident involved a Peugeot 206 which was driven by a 30-year-old Barrow woman, who is not believed to be injured.

The road has now reopened.

The North West Air Ambulance, Great North Air Ambulance, Walney and Barrow firefighters and police were all called to the scene.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact PC 1639 Wilson on 101.
