COUNCILLORS raised a listed Barrow building as a matter of an urgent nature in a meeting this week as discussions over its condition continue.

In a meeting of Barrow Borough Council's planning committee at Barrow Town Hall on Tuesday, chairwoman Councillor Ann Thomson noted the situation regarding the property of 81 Duke Street, Barrow.

The building, which houses the Antalya Takeaway, has been supported by structural scaffolding after defects were found in the building in August.

After Cllr Thomson had noted the item as urgent, council planning officer Charles Wilton said: "The building is currently structured with scaffolding at the moment, and that is as a result of the building having structural defects.

"The building is listed, and there is legislation that allows the council to intervene."

The building was deemed at "serious risk of collapse" in August, with visible cracks showing on the building.

The situation surrounding the Grade-II listed property saw a decision taken to close a section of Duke Street around the building while scaffolding was erected.

In mid-September the section of road was reopened after the scaffolding was put in place following a structural survey.

Cllr Thomson has said that the council wants to make sure the building is not at risk of collapsing and that it doesn't put people in danger.

She said: "The last thing we want is for the building to fall down on Duke Street.

"When the road had to be closed, it caused chaos when the scaffolding was put up.

"Although we can make it safe under legislation, until the partners can agree on something our hands are tied."

The landlord of the building is set to take a second assessment of the building to review the situation.
