FIRE crews can now confirm the blaze that broke out yesterday at a local farm has been put out.

Barrow fire crew managed to put the fire at Sinkfall Farm, Rakesmoor Lane, Barrow, out last night. However, crews had to return this morning because there were some areas they couldn't get to because of a collapsed roof.

Mark Ducie, of Barrow Fire, said: "We returned at 7am this morning to continue damping down and turn over operations to make sure everything was safe and that any remaining hot patches were put out.

"The farm has now been handed back over to the owner to clean up the debris."

Crews began battling the blaze at 1.27pm yesterday. Six appliances from Barrow, Broughton, Grange, Millom and Ulverston - which has two engines - worked on putting out the fire until late last night.

Two firefighters had to be sent into the barn to remove some gas cylinders which were inside.

At one point during the afternoon, foam and ground monitors were also being used to fight the blaze.

Residents in Dalton had earlier been warned by the police to close their windows because of smoke being blown in that direction. Officers closed Park Road in both directions between the two roundabouts from the end of Abbey Road to the A590 and traffic was being diverted through Dalton.

The police said that the roads would be closed until at least 6.30pm that evening to allow the firefighters to do their job. By 3.30pm firefighters had started bringing the blaze under control, which reduced the risk of asbestos significantly.
