POLICE have confirmed armed officers were called to an area of Barrow in response to reports of a group of men fighting in the street using weapons.

Around 10 police vehicles, including a number of armed police officers, were called to the Vulcan Road and Brathay Crescent area of Barrow last night.

Calls had been made to police to report a group of men brandishing weapons including metal bars were fighting in the street.

A 33-year-old Barrow man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and remains in custody today.

In connection with a separate incident, police also arrested a 25-year-old Barrow man on suspicion of assault and criminal damage. He has since been bailed.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "Cumbria Constabulary made one arrest following an incident in the Brathay Crescent and Vulcan Road area of Barrow yesterday (21 May 2017).

"Officers, including armed officers, attended and arrested one man aged 33 on suspicion of a public order offence following reports of a group of men fighting in the area of Vulcan Road. Some of those involved were reported to be in possession of weapons including metal bars.

"Nobody has been found to have suffered any injuries during the incident. The male remains in police custody.

"A 25 year old male was also arrested at the same time on suspicion of assault and criminal damage in relation to an unconnected indecent. That male has been released on police bail."
