THE M6 has been named as one of three motorways set to get a bank holiday battering as hundreds of thousands of motorists make their way home from bank holiday breaks.

Traffic levels are set to peak later today as the bank holiday weekend draws to a close.

It is expected to be the busiest spring bank holiday Monday for three years, with many having taken advantage of the sun.

Today 3.3 million car trips are expected to be made.

Over 20 Highways England schemes were either lifted or completed on motorways and major roads in the north west in time for the bank holiday weekend, including work on the A590 and the M6.

But motorists are still being advised to plan ahead, ensuring their car's fuel tanks are full.
