ARMED with bin bags and grabbers, staff from Barrow Associated British Ports braved the January cold to help keep the town tidy.

'Tiday Friday' was an initiative thought up by staff at ABP to make sure the area around their Barrow offices was something to be proud of.

In spite of the bitterly cold weather, staff went out to clear the litter near the port to show their commitment to the community.

North West divisional port manager Carl Bevan said: "As a division of ABP, we are committed to keep our ports tidy at all times, benefiting not only our customers, but also the community and environment."

Mr Bevan added: "As part of our commitment to being a 'good neighbour', we are extending our clean-up to work with Barrow Borough Council and tidy up a walkway adjacent to the port.

On Friday staff from the port left their workstations and went out to clear up the area surrounding the offices. In the space of an hour they collected seven bin bags of rubbish from Ramsden Dock Road.

The port will continue the litter pick every Friday for the foreseeable future.
