GOOD causes reaped the rewards of a night of boxing for charity after an event from the masonic community raised almost £5,000.

The annual boxing evening for the Furness and South Lakeland Freemasons raised money for a number of local causes as amateur boxing clubs from south Cumbria attended to showcase their skills back in January.

It was revealed that the event raised £4,700, which was donated to 13 local organisations in a presentation at Grange Hall on Saturday, May 21.

Group chairman, Peter Schofield, said: "This money is targeted at local charities, those that might otherwise get overlooked.

"The donations range from £200 to £600 and to some of the smaller concerns will prove a significant boost to their income.

"I am proud of the support that the local Masons are giving their community."

Furness Carers were one of those to receive a donation. Their cheque was received on their behalf by Barbara Crellin, with the money going towards vital respite care for carers.

Among those receiving donations were Barrow Amateur Boxing Club and Furness Catholic Boxing Club who have regularly had fighters on the cards for the event.

As part of January's event, Jeff Moses, of Barrow ABC, also introduced three of his junior members who received a warm welcome during a demonstration of their own skills.

Another one of the recipients of a donation was Xenolith Scout group, from Ulverston, who said they would be using their donation to purchase rucksacks for future expeditions.

Others that received donations courtesy of the money raised at the event included Radio Lonsdale, Dalton Community Association and Cumbria Deaf/Vision.

Also represented at the event were The Salvation Army. Their representative, David Dryden, said the donation they received will be used to benefit the local area

He said: "We are grateful for the donation and in keeping with the aims of the boxing committee this money will be used locally."

The next fundraising event by the FSLF will be their group concert at Coronation Hall, Ulverston on  Saturday.
