THE creator of some of television's most loved programmes has died at the age of 93.

Jimmy Perry was the mastermind behind Dad's Army, Hi-de-Hi! and 'Allo 'Allo! to name just a few of his works.

He drew on some of his own life experiences to write some of the most iconic characters on TV.

The bumbling Private Pike on Dad's Army, which ran from 1968 to 1977 was based on his own experiences in the Home Guard during the Second World War.

He also worked as a Redcoat in Butlins holiday camps - inspiring the comedy Hi-de-Hi! which ran from 1980 to 1988.
