STUDENTS prepared a feast of Thai cuisine with the help of two mentor chefs.

Furness College catering students worked with Thai chefs Surarak Green and Toi Kwanram to create a banquet for 45 guests on Thursday evening.

Furness Multicultural Community Forum hosted the event at the Channelside college in Barrow as a fundraiser for the multicultural forum's youth group.

The students have worked with the mentors for the past few weeks and they cooked up satays, green curry, wontons, jasmine rice and more on the night.

The banquet was served up in the college restaurant and young people from the multicultural forum's youth group treated the guests to some traditional Thai dancing.

The event also fell closely to the Thailand Water Festival, Songkran, which marks the Thai new year from April 13 to April 15.

Bob Qazi, chairman of Furness Multicultural Community Forum, said: "It was a great event with a delicious banquet of around eight dishes all prepared by the students with the chefs.

"It was a very good experience for the students and we hope to do another event like this at the college."

Mr Qazi said the event was set to raise around £500 for the youth group.

More than 20 national cultural backgrounds are represented at the youth group which is for any 10 to 16-year-olds.

The group meets on Fridays at St Mark's Church, in Buccleuch Street, Barrow, from 4pm to 6pm.

The young people get involved in arts and crafts, cooking and also away days, such as ice skating trips, and they also have a summer camp.
