A TEENAGER who caused a serious collision which flipped over another car has been banned from driving.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving when he appeared at Furness Youth Court yesterday.

The court heard that the male driver did not have a full driving licence and only started lessons in March this year.

CCTV footage of the collision shows a black Audi A3 smashing into an orange Ford B-Max on June 15 at the junction where Rawlinson Street, Holker Street and Abbey Road in Barrow meet.

Mr Lee Dacre, prosecuting said: “The Ford is not a small car; it’s a substantial car.

“It was high impact and it caused considerable disruption to members of the public and not only that but it had a substantial effect on the other driver.”

The male defendant had bought the Audi because of his love of cars.

The court heard how he had no money to ‘do it up’ and advertised the car for sale.

It was during a test drive with a prospective buyer the defendant noticed he was being followed by police.

Miss Maureen Fawcett, defending, said: “My client realises he could have been here today charged with death by dangerous driving.

“While he took two days before he admitted to this, he was unable to sleep and was worried about the victim. This has been a large weight on his shoulders but he has a lot of growing up to do.”

Miss Fawcett told the court the defendant’s family have suffered since the incident, saying they have been through a “horrific time” and are considering moving away from Cumbria.

Presiding magistrate Margaret Rogerson said the charges were “of a very serious nature” and disqualified the youth from driving.

A hearing was scheduled for Friday August 5 to allow the defendant to work with youth services while they compile reports.
