A MAJOR new TV adapted of J.K. Rowling's detective novels starts this bank holiday weekend - while the scenes filmed in Barrow are to be show early next year.

The Cormoran Strike books, penned by the Harry Potter author under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, have been adapted for a new BBC One series. Tom Burke stars as Cormoran Strike, a war veteran turned private detective, and Holliday Grainger plays Robin Ellacott, assistant to Strike.

The first in the Strike series, The Cuckoo's Calling, begins on Sunday August 27 at 9pm on BBC One, with the second episode going out the next day on Monday August 28.

The next three episodes of the seven-part series are to be aired on September 3, 10 and 17.

The Cuckoo's Calling has been adapted into three one-hour episodes, with the sequel, The Silkworm, adapted into a two-part story. The third book in the series, Career of Evil - which is to feature scenes filmed in Barrow, is set to be broadcast in early 2018.

The Cuckoo’s Calling was published to critical acclaim in 2013 and went on to be a global bestseller, followed in 2014 by The Silkworm and Career Of Evil in 2015. All three books were number one Sunday Times bestsellers in both hardback and paperback and Little, Brown has sold in total over four million copies worldwide across all editions.

In Career Of Evil the characters pass Barrow’s Craven Park rugby ground and there are references to the Crow’s Nest, the Olympic takeaway, Barrow Grammar School for Boys and BAE Systems. They also eat in The Last Resort cafe, in Cavendish Street. Ken and Jean Crosby, of Ulverston, spotted the superstar author in Barrow town centre back in 2014. J.K Rowling came to Barrow for research, visiting The Last Resort cafe and going to The Crow's Nest, Barrow Island.

In 2016 Barrow and Furness MP, John Woodcock, tweeted J.K. Rowling and she replied saying: "I was in Barrow last year researching #CareerofEvil."

She went onto post: "I loved the Last Resort, they fed us well! The Crow's Nest pub was great too. My first time in Barrow."

In January a film crew and the Strike actors descended on Barrow Island to shoot scenes at The Crow's Nest and on the corner of Ferry Road and Stanley Road.

Grainger, who has starred in the Borgias and Mike Newell’s adaptation of Great Expectations, was seen driving an old faded Land Rover in scenes.

Sheila Littletown, of Barrow, and Kate Wallace, of Workington, went along to Ferry Road to watch filming and they meet Tom Burke, who starred in the BBC’s epic drama War And Peace as Fedor Dolokhov and in The Musketeers as Athos.

Mrs Wallace, of Workington, said: "I am very excited for the series to start. It seems an age since we last saw Tom Burke on our TV screens."
