SECRET admirers and groups of friends have supported a sweet-hearted Barrow fundraising activity for Valentine's Day.

Senior prefects at Furness Academy took orders from students for their decorated heart-shaped biscuits.

Headgirl Lydia Shepherd had the idea that the students could raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society, one of the academy's chosen charities, by students paying £1 to have a heart-shaped biscuit with a message delivered to a would be sweet-heart or one of their friends.

The team hand-decorated the biscuits with red, pink and white icing and

added tags with messages.

The messages included everything from "Will you go out with me?," to "Thanks for being my best friend".

The prefects then delivered the treats to excited students during form time yesterday morning.

The team took 120 pre-orders from romantics, friends and those with a sweet tooth, but they also decided to decorate extra biscuits for sales on the day to make more for the charity.

As well as looking great with the icing decoration, students also said the biscuits tasted great too.

Deputy headgirl Courtney Morrow was one of the student team who has been busy carefully icing and hand-writing messages after school this week for the Valentine's project.

The 15-year-old student said it had been a lot of fun and all for a very good cause.

Courtney said: "Lots of students ordered biscuits. Some of the messages have been funny and nice. We also made extra ones to give out.

"It's been really good fun and we have made money for the Alzheimer's Society."

Each academic year Furness Academy raises thousands of pounds for its chosen charities.

Alongside their national cause of the Alzheimer's Society, the academy is also raising money for The Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group through The Jake Ellis Fund, in memory of brave Jake Ellis who died aged five in 2008.

There are more fundraising events to come, including Furness Academy having teams in the Coniston to Barrow and Keswick to Barrow this May.
