WEATHER warnings have been issued for snow and wind in south Cumbria this week.
Some very strong winds are expected throughout Thursday in association with Storm Doris.
While the strongest winds look to be only short-lived, damage to structures, interruptions to power supplies and widespread disruption to travel networks are likely, with a danger of injury from flying debris.
Heavy rain is also likely through Thursday as well as some snow over high ground as the system clears eastwards. These may prove additional hazards.
Snow fall of 5-10cm is expected on some hills with 2-5cm possible to lower levels in Scotland. The largest accumulation of 10-20cm is likely on highest parts of the north Pennines.
In addition, strong winds are expected to develop with gusts of 50-60mph. This will result in drifting of the snow and blizzard conditions over high ground. Associated heavy rain at lower levels will be an additional hazard.
The combination of snow, strong winds and heavy rain is likely to lead to disruption to transport networks and perhaps power supplies.
The alerts are in place from 10am-6pm on Thursday.
