SHIPYARD fundraisers took to the fells to raise cash for a soldiers' charity.

Four teams of employees from BAE Systems Submarines put on their hiking boots to support the 2017 Walking with the Wounded Cumbrian Challenge.

The company was an official sponsor of the annual fundraising event which offers three walking challenges across Cumbrian fells.

Proceeds go to help retrain and re-skill wounded veterans, supporting them in finding new careers after leaving the military.

Ian Lofthouse, Director of Nuclear Integration at BAE Systems Submarines and a former submariner, said: "Supporting our Armed Forces is very important to BAE Systems.

"Walking with the Wounded's Cumbrian Challenge really resonated with us, and provided an exciting opportunity to launch our wider programme of work to help those leaving the forces, along with their families and supporting organisations.

"Many of my colleagues know what life is like when leaving the Army, Royal Navy or RAF, and I can only imagine how difficult it is for those with physical or unseen injuries."

Allan Day, Director of Barrow's Site Redevelopment Programme at BAE Systems Submarines said: β€œIt was a privilege to be able to take part in the Walking with the Wounded event and support our military personnel.

"Two teams from our Site Redevelopment Programme trained hard since the beginning of the year and really enjoyed taking on the 'Tough Route' this weekend.

"From a personal perspective, it was the hardest walk I've ever done. However, it is a small gesture of gratitude to the brave service men and women who, through their unselfish actions, keep us safe.

"The money donated to our teams from both individuals and businesses will help a lot of people and I would like to thank everyone for their support.”
