South Cumbria Army Cadets enjoyed a splashing canoe adventure as part of a skills building weekend.

This summer Army Cadets from Barrow, Dalton and Walney took to

Coniston Water under the supervision of qualified instructors.

The 14 cadets from the South of Cumbria took part in the event which involved a number of challenges and skills building activities.

The event was subsidised by donations made to the local detachment which enable this group of teenagers to experience this adventurous training for £5. All the equipment was provided from the Army Cadet Force.

Although fitness was an added benefit to the weekend, the biggest element was having fun alongside friends and instructors.

Cadet LCpl Brad Smillie from Barrow said “It was a great action packed weekend on the lake testing team work and our ability to use the canoes. It was very fun even though we ended up in the water more times than the canoe.”

The detachment thanked the cadet force adult volunteers who enabled the event to take place.

Army Cadet detachments in Barrow, Dalton, Millom and Kendal are taking on new cadets from 12 to 18 years.

They need to be motivated and interested in improving their own futures and we can provide the rest. Activities include shooting, physical fitness, navigation and camping, field training and survival and a wide range of adventure training.

All levels of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme run alongside cadet training. This is also subsidised and kit and equipment can be provided.
