A SPECTACULAR display of vintage/classic cars and motorbikes lined Barrow town centre on Saturday.

Dalton Road was filled with those who have a passion for cars and bikes at Barrow's first event of its kind.

The event was organised by Barrow BID, a private-sector led initiative that is funded by businesses in the town.

The BID’s aim is to increase footfall into the town centre and one way of achieving this is to organise events like the vintage car show.

Barrow BID manager, Phil Collier, said: “This is just one of a number of events that the BID has planned. We have been organising this one for a while now so it is great to see it come to fruition.

"It is a long time since I have seen this many people in Dalton Road and the interest that has been shown in the cars and bikes has been fabulous.

“Having seen how successful this event has been, we can consider making this an annual event and, from the many lovely comments received, I feel we can really build on this, both in terms of the number of vehicles on display as well as creating a real festival atmosphere."

Eddy Rafter of Barrow brought his 44-year-old Cadillac with him on the day. He has a strong passion for classic American cars.

He said: "It has been a lifelong passion of mine to have a car like this for as long as I can remember.

"It's good for my self-esteem and I feel like a king when I'm in it."

He tries to drive the Cadillac on a weekly basis, not liking to leave it standing for more than three to four days at a time.

Kate Lawty, of Barrow, inherited her love of Series 1 Land Rovers from her father. Ernie, the car she had with her, was inherited from him.

She said: "I remember when I was 15, he was doing it up in the garage. "He would be really proud to see it here today."

Mayor of Barrow, Councillor Tony Callister, attended the event. He loves vintage and classic motorbikes and hopes that when he retires next year he can get one.

He said: "This is a really cool event, it's a good attraction and to see the passion people are talking with is great.

"Some of these cars are better than show standard, I'm actually quite excited to see it all.

"We take things like this for granted, if you were to go to Manchester this would be the norm but here it isn't. We really need to appreciate it and the effort put into it."
