A NEW look Three Lions strode out onto the pitch in Dortmund last night as England took on their fierce rivals Germany in a friendly.

It was the first match under new manager Gareth Southgate, who over the last week has said England must shake off their 'island mentality' if they want to compete with Europe's greatest.

There were some surprises in the team selection as Southgate started Michael Keane and Jake Livermore, but omitted Wayne Rooney.

Playing a 3-4-3 formation, England were bright and on the front foot during the match, showing a sense of purpose and desire to attack lacking in recent months.

However, they lacked a cutting edge, squandering opportunities to break the deadlock against Die Mannschaft.

Their effort was in vain as Lukas Podolski marked his final Germany appearance with a stunning winner to secure a 1-0 victory.

Speaking after the match Southgate said he was proud of his team.

He said: "Up until the goal I thought we were really the better side. Germany then had a little spell when they controlled it and obviously we put some of our younger players on.

"That was a good learning experience for them, but I am very pleased with what we learned, the manner of the performance."

Debuts were also given to Southampton's James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond, perhaps indicating Southgate will favour youth as he builds his England squad.

What did you make of the new look England, a good balance of youth and tried and tested players, or was our lack of experience clear to see? Let us know
