THE launch of a book celebrating the strong history of amateur musical theatre in the South Cumbria takes place tonight.

Graham Whalan, originally of Ulverston has written The Sound of Musicals . This follows on from Mr Whalan's book 100 years of the Coronation Hall .

The launch of The Sound of Musicals takes place at Barrow Library in Cumbria Archive and Local Studies

Centre, from 7pm.

Mr Whalan grew up in the l950s and remembers the thrill of watching a live show at The Coronation Hall, in Ulverston and his father and sister performing in some amateur productions.

While researching the Coronation Hall he came across many reviews of a vast array of successful productions staged all over the Furness area through the years and he wanted to record this history.

He has covered amateur musical theatre in Barrow, Walney, Dalton, Ulverston, Broughton Grange and Flookburgh.

Mr Whalan said: "Some of these societies have been going for more than 100 years. It's an important part of the social fabric of the area."

The book includes photos from the North-West Evening Mail archives and the foreword has been written by Helen Wall, a former arts correspondent for the Evening Mail.

The book is priced at £7.99 and is available from stabledoorpress@gmail.com and Amazon.
