YOUNGSTERS embraced the world of Star Wars at a library's special event last week.

Barrow Library held their Star Wars craft event last week on Wednesday February 14, with youngsters getting creative in their efforts to impress.

Tom Ashton, library assistant at Barrow Library, said: "It really was a great time had by all. They all had a fantastic time and their parents all seemed to really enjoy it too.

"We had about 15 children and we split them into two groups, the first of which we asked to build droids.

"They were all really impressive. The children used soup tins and bits of stickers and made some really good droids.

"We had the other group making lightsabers and then they swapped over so no one was missing out."

It wasn't just the children who embraced the spirit of the day, with Mr Ashton himself dressing up as Kylo Ren for the activities.

He said: "I was dressed up as a Sith lord and at one point they got to beat me up with their lightsabers, so they loved that.

"Who doesn't want to dress up when they're a young child and beat up a Sith lord?

"They were all able to take their creations home so they were really excited about that."

15 youngsters, aged between six and 11, took part in the event.

As part of the day, prizes were awarded for the best dressed and the best droid.

The youngsters were also tasked with finding an array of characters from the film franchise hidden around the library, on Ramsden Square.

Mr Ashton said: "We decided to hide some pictures of characters around the library so they could go around it all and explore to find them."

The day was organised by Mr Ashton and the library's community support officer Maria Bellis.

It comes ahead of the release of the franchise's latest instalment Solo: A Star Wars Story, later this year, while Star Wars Episode VIII, the Last Jedi, was released last year.

Mr Ashton said: "There's a lot of excitement around it at the minute so we knew everyone would really enjoy this, and my colleague is mad about Star Wars.

"It's obviously really important to get children engaging with their local libraries from a young age.

"We want to show that we are not just about books, and there's a lot of opportunities available at libraries."
