COMMUTERS who are increasingly frustrated with the public transport situation in south Cumbria have been given a chance to air their grievances.

Tomorrow (20) a meeting will take place at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston to discuss what can be done to improve the local situation.

The meeting comes in the wake of Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock re-establishing his Cumbria Better Connected Campaign. The lobby group is asking for community support to demand better services for Cumbrians living in the south of the county.

Speaking earlier in October, Mr Woodcock said of the group: "I know passengers are sick to death of the dreadful reliability of services to and from Lancaster and up the coast and the clapped-out, uncomfortable carriages and ancient locomotives which break down, belch smoke and give a dreadful impression of the area."

Managers from Northern, the rail provider, have admitted the Furness line is one of the biggest source of complaints for the company. Delays and cancellations on the line are a regular occurrence for passengers with their patience rapidly running out.

At the meeting key local stakeholders in the railway system will be represented including passengers, members of the business community, local authority representatives and trade unions.

In light of the decision made by GSK to withdraw from Ulverston, Mr Woodcock has said having strong and reliable transport in and out of Furness is essential to attract a prospective buyer.

There will be an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions of the stakeholders.

All are welcome to attend the meeting at the Coronation Hall. It will take place between 2pm and 4pm in the Supper Room.
