Barrow shipyard owner BAE Systems has signed a new contract with multinational firm John Wood Group.

Under the new deal John Wood Group - which trades as the Wood Group - will provide hull and pipe insulation for the Royal navy's new Astute class submarines, which are being built in Barrow.

This contact has up to three one-year extension options attached. No more details have been revealed.

Dave Stewart, John Wood Group's chief executive of the asset life cycle solutions business in the eastern hemisphere, said: "Wood Group has supported the Royal Navy for 40 years in the provision of marine painting. This award builds on our reputation for providing industrial services and protective insulation technologies to the marine sector.

"We look forward to continuing our strong collaborative relationship with BAE Systems, delivering engineered hull and pipe insulation to the Astute class - the Royal Navy's largest and most powerful fleet of attack submarines."

BAE have not commented.

This deal was announced in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

Wood Group has it global headquarters in Aberdeen and is primarily involved in the energy services industry.

Earlier this year it announced a purchase of engineering consultancy Amec Foster Wheeler, which employs about 300 people in Cumbria, in Westlakes Science & Technology Park, Moor Row, at Sellafield and at the BAE yard. These staff are unlikely to be affected by the deal as the part of Amec they work for is up for sale.
