A SCHOOLGIRL has been airlifted to hospital after she was knocked down by a car in Barrow.

The 11-year-old was involved in a collision with a Kia car in Friars Lane this afternoon.

The incident happened at about 3.30pm and the North West Ambulance Service, the North West Air Ambulance and Barrow police were called to the scene.

A spokeswoman from the North West Ambulance Service said the girl had sustained numerous injuries. They received a call about the incident at 3.29pm, with a land ambulance and senior paramedics attending the scene.

The girl was airlifted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool for treatment. The helicopter landed in the playing field of Cambridge Primary School.

Police said this evening that the girl's injuries are non-life threatening.

The driver of the car was not injured in the incident.

Friars Lane was closed for more than three hours, but it is now fully reopen.
