SCARECROWS of all shapes and sizes took over a school hall for the harvest celebrations.

Brisbane Park Infant School staged a scarecrow competition for their harvest festival.

The pupils have been reading Julian Donaldson's The Scarecrows' Wedding and this was used as the inspiration for the Barrow school's harvest event.

Children and their parents made a variety of scarecrows and brought them to school. There were 65 entries in the contest.

There were Halloween scarecrows and friendly scarecrows, some made from vegetables and others sewn.

Pupils, parents and staff were invited to vote for their favourite scarecrows. They were entitled to vote by making donations of fresh food or tinned food to the harvest collection.

The school is donating the fresh food to Furness Homeless Support Group, in Bath Street, and the tins to Barrow and District Society for the Blind.

The winner was Tilly Robinson who won a voucher for The Wacky Warehouse and the runners up were Lewi Law and Molly Harris who won Lazer Zone vouchers.

Teacher Cheryl Hagen, who leads the arts at Brisbane Park Infant School, said: "We expected to have about 20 scarecrows, but we had 65 which was great. We were really pleased, they are very creative."
