SCAFFOLDING has finally been removed from a listed Barrow town centre building which was deemed to be at "serious risk of collapse" after cracks appeared.

The property at 81 Duke Street, which houses the Antalya Takeaway, has been supported by structural scaffolding after defects were found in the building in August 2015.

The situation surrounding the Grade-II listed property saw a decision taken to close a section of Duke Street around the building while scaffolding was erected. At the time, council chiefs said the building was at serious risk of collapse.

In mid-September 2015, the section of road was reopened after the scaffolding was put in place following a structural survey.

The landlord of the building was then set to take a second assessment of the building to review the situation.

Structural scaffolding was installed at Antayla by a contractor while repairs were carried out and Cumbria County Council and Barrow Borough Council have been working with representatives of the owners to safeguard the public and stabilise the building.

The scaffolding has now been removed and the Evening Mail understands the repairs have been completed. Council building control officers are yet to inspect the building.
