LONG-SUFFERING motorists are having their patience stretched to breaking point as roadworks continue to blight the roads of Furness and the South Lakes.

Cable work: Bridge Road on Barrow Island Thousands of drivers are set to face further delays in Bridge Road, Barrow , as temporary traffic lights will be installed to allow new power cables to be laid connecting the new Central Yard Facility to the grid.

The temporary lights will be working 24 hours a day for the next fortnight.

Traffic travelling towards Walney in Bridge Road outside the main entrance to Tesco Extra is reduced to one lane while underground repairs are carried out.

Major roadworks in Ulverston and Lindal have added to the toxic brew of traffic headaches faced by commuters. However, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel.

Road resurfacing along Salthouse Road, in Barrow , is due to be completed by Friday, while a similar operation to upgrade the A590 in Ulverston is on schedule to be finished by the end of the month.

Diversions are also in place in Oxford Street with resurfacing work going on, and both Grantley Road and Furness Park Road closed to everyone excluding residents.

Slow going: Roadworks in Ulverston for the new traffic light system on the A590 LINDSEY DICKINGS Delays in Ulverston, between Quebec Street and Swan Street , have been ongoing for several weeks, with temporary traffic lights gradually removed in place of narrow lanes.

The temporary traffic lights at the Lindal Dip have caused lengthy tailbacks as drivers look to get in and out of Barrow.

Flood prevention work has been carried out in the area since late February, and as road users may have noticed while reading the signposts from their stationary vehicles, it is supposed to last six weeks.

Highways England says it is on course to finish the work by the end of the month.

A spokesman said: "The new eastbound carriageway and footpath are awaiting a final blacktop (top surfacing).

"We’re still working on the new westbound lane, which is adjacent to the single lane being used by traffic controlled by traffic lights."

Lengthy delays: Traders in Bowness have been hit by the closure of the A592 due to water improvement works LINDSEY DICKINGS While the end is in sight for delays at the Lindal Dip, the news is not quite so encouraging for those trying to get to Bowness.

The main route, via the A592 at Newby Bridge , has been closed intermittently since the new year.

Work by United Utilities on a £40m project to improve water quality is scheduled to last until April.

Two further phases of the project are planned in November of this year and again in November 2018.

While some roadworks will draw to a close in the coming weeks, another is soon to begin.

A new 320m surface will be laid on worn-out sections of Abbey Road , starting on Monday and will cause disruption for the next two weeks.

The work will take place between Victoria Avenue and Park Drive, with motorists facing a diversion on their way into town, having to follow a signed diversion via Rating Lane/Hollow Lane and Bridgegate Avenue.

Abbey Road remains reduced to two southbound lanes between Dalkeith Street and Duke Street following a fire at the House of Lords building back in January.

Meanwhile, the M6 will be closed overnight for two weeks on the southbound carriageway between junctions 44 and 43.

Work to repair St John’s Bridge over the M6 near Carlisle, which was left damaged after it was struck by a high vehicle, started on Monday night.

The bridge carries Houghton Road North over the motorway between junction 43 for Carlisle and junction 44 for Carlisle North. The 2 week repair project involves full overnight closures of the southbound carriageway – from 8pm to 6am each night – between junction 44 and junction 43.

During the overnight closures, drivers will need to leave the southbound M6 at junction 44 and use the eastbound A689 towards Brampton and then the westbound A69 back to junction 43.

During the day, the southbound carriageway will be reduced to 2 narrowed lanes with a 50mph speed limit in place. The lane 1 closure will be in place to allow the concrete used in the overnight repairs to harden during the day.

The local road, Houghton Road North, which uses the bridge to cross over the motorway, will be closed around the clock during the work.
