WEATHER chaos is gripping south Cumbria this evening as adverse conditions take hold across the county.

There are widespread effects on the transport network, as heavy rain, strong winds and even snow batter towns and villages.

Some roads have been closed, while a number of rail services have been either delayed or cancelled.

Police are urging anybody out and about to be cautious.

The warning follows an incident on the M6 which saw a car career off the motorway.

Fire Crews from Sedbergh were called to deal with the situation. Fortunately there were no serious injuries.

Meanwhile, train services have been disrupted causing delays to passengers passing through Barrow.

At Lancaster hundreds of passengers were stranded earlier this evening, with many journeys being delayed or even cancelled.

All travellers are being advised to check the status of their service.

Roads have also been closed. The A592 at Troutbeck near Windermere is shut due to a fallen tree and snow.

The A595 at Blackbeck Roundabout, Egremont, is also closed due to a tree on the carriageway. Diversions are in place via Beckermet.

This radar image shows the state of the county at around 7.15pm as rain lashed many parts.
