THREE of the worst traffic jams in the UK which left drivers facing up to 15 hours of disruption and tailbacks were all on the same motorway.

While the M5 saw the worst individual incident, it was the M6 motorway in Cheshire and Lancashire, that featured most in the top five.

The road, which is vital for connecting Cumbria with the rest of the North West, occupied three spots in the top-five based on data collected between September 2016 and August 2017.

On April 7, motorists travelling past J21 suffered eight hours of disruption due to repair works, the second worst behind a 15 hour disruption caused by a fuel spill in Somerset on the A5.

Making third place was an eight hour between the M6's J17 and 23 after a lorry broke down on August 25.

While fourth place was occupied by a 15 hour wait for motorists on the A406W last November, the M6 reappeared again after a fire and repairs caused 10 hours of disruptions at J32, on December 13, 2016.

Congestion

While the worst traffic jams were caused by accidents and other unexpected problems, some roads often get snarled up.

According to another Inrix study, drivers lost 73 hours in 2016 to delays along the A406 Northbound from Chiswick Roundabout to Hanger Lane in Ealing, London.

The UK's top 10 most congested roads, and the number of hours lost to them, were:

1) A406 Northbound - Chiswick Roundabout to Hanger Lane, London - 73 hours

2) A2 Eastbound - New Cross Gate to Prince Charles Road, London - 62 hours

3) A3211 Eastbound - Westminster Bridge to London Bridge, London - 57 hours

4) A102 Northbound - A2/Kidbrooke to Blackwall Tunnel, London - 51 hours

5) A4200 Southbound - Russell Square to Aldwych, London - 50 hours

6) A1 Southbound - College Gardens to Wallace Park, Belfast - 49 hours

7) A308 Eastbound - Putney Bridge Approach to Sloane Square, London - 46 hours

8) A431 Westbound - Bryants Hill to Lawrence Hill, Bristol - 45 hours 9) A24 Northbound - Ormeau Road to Ann Street, Belfast - 45 hours 10) A6 Northbound - Macclesfield Road to Heaton Lane, Manchester - 44 hours
