AN ambitious £1m revamp of Barrow Island is set to begin next month.
In 2013 Barrow Borough Council lodged a brief with the Landscape Institute for a competition to improve the public areas in and around the flats on Barrow Island.
The design has been drawn up by Farrer Huxley Associates and James Smith, the team selected by Barrow Borough Council to lead the project after £1m was secured from the government’s Clusters of Empty Homes Fund.
Work is set to get under way in October and will include creating a number of unique sensory spaces connected by paths, paving, planting, lawns, a play area and growing areas.
The plan also involves creating a restricted parking zone for residents only. Parking spaces would fall from 146 to 98.
In conjunction with the Furness Economic Development Forum, contractor Ground Control are hosting a supply chain event tomorrow in a bid to open up the work to local businesses. The event will be held at the Barrow Island Drop-in Centre in Island Road between 10am and noon tomorrow.
Work will include fencing, landscaping, gardening, concreting, lighting work and drainage works. For more information call 01229 314039.
