IT was standing room only at a meeting which attracted hoards of angry residents protesting against plans to build a concrete plant in the middle of a rural village.

Homeowners turned out in force to Pennington Parish Council on Monday night to air their views on proposals under consultation by South Lakeland District Council. L&W Wilson in Endmoor wants to build a batching plant with two 12m silos on Ore Mill Sidings in Lindal.

The patch of land lies between the A590 and the railway line opposite homes in Bank Terrace, where Sarah Braithwaite lives.

The 35-year-old said: “There were about 60 people there, so it was standing room only. I think they were quite surprised by the turn-out - the majority were there as a direct result of the flyering we’ve been doing.”

Pennington decided to echo the actions of Lindal and Marton Parish Council in formally objecting to the proposals, while residents are hosting a dedicated meeting about the plans at Lindal’s Buccleuch Hall from 7pm on Monday.

Miss Braithwaite said: “There are still houses in Marton and Pennington that we haven’t been to yet, so I’ve got my work cut out for me. My Fitbit’s going to be going mad!

“It’s a case of getting everyone together to voice our concerns, because we think as a group we’ll have more clout than as individuals.”

Attending Monday’s meeting was SLDC councillor for Mid Furness, Andrew Butcher.

He said: “The majority of people I’ve spoken to are not in favour of this. People who don’t even live near the area aren’t in favour of this, because of the issues with the A590.

“We’re going to get very slow-moving wagons and, to me, it shouldn’t be there. It should be somewhere there are already holdings for them.”

L&W Wilson’s application describes how a batching source is needed closer to Ulverston than ones in Kendal and Barrow, to meet the needs of projects such as the GSK development and new affordable housing. The planning application describes how the visual and noise impacts of the plant would be controlled.
