MEMBERS of a community have been celebrating the revival of two war memorials.

The memorials in the villages of Lindal and Marton were restored following donations.

Residents have been giving their thanks to those who made it possible.

According to Jack Smith, clerk to Lindal and Marton Parish Council, the work, which was completed late last year, progressed smoothly and make the memorials fitting landmarks for both towns.

The hope is that the transformation of the memorials will be something that all residents in the area can be proud of.

Mr Smith said: "It has made a considerable difference, we didn't appreciate how different it would be and it was a case of getting them cleaned.

"When the sun shines on them, particularly on the one in Lindal, they look very attractive in the light.

"I think it has made a significant difference and we have all been surprised at how improved and how nice they look."

Lindal resident Angela Wood was the first to notice that the memorial in Lindal was in need of some TLC.

Mrs Wood said: "It was when I was out walking with the dog and it is the first thing you see when you come into the town. After the World War One centenary (in 2014) I thought it would be a nice thing to do up."

"I didn't even know anything had happened until I had seen people cleaning it."

The refurbishment of the memorials was organised by Lindal and Marton Parish Council as part of the commemoration of the First World War.

Generous donations, such as £1,000 from Chris Rawlinson of Lindal Business Park and £500 from Barrow Borough Council, went towards the cost of bringing them back to life.

Residents have also been adding their thanks to Mossops Monumental Masons, the stonemasons who completed the work to restore the treasured memorials.
