Public rallies round to raise £1m for Cumbria flood appeal in just a week

AN appeal to help victims of the floods has raised more than £1,000,000.

Generous individuals and businesses have rallied together and donated what they can to the Cumbria Flood Appeal 2015.

The fund is being run by the Cumbria Community Foundation and has now tripled its original target to £3m.

Grants will help flood victims carry out repairs on their homes, replace furniture and clean up the damage.

Andy Beeforth, chief executive of Cumbria Community Foundation, said: "People will need financial help to rebuild and we want to have the means to do that.

"It is difficult to assess the scale of the need, but we know that the flooding will cause significant financial hardship and emotional distress.

"We will be convening meetings with the major voluntary groups involved in the recovery and also with major providers of social housing to assess the impact on their tenants.”
