A PUB landlady said Barrow's overwhelming pride and support for the national team this World Cup has seen her serve at least an extra 450 pints a match.

Adele Geering, landlady at the Victoria Tavern, said business has been booming as England has progressed through the tournament.

She said: "We have been selling around 450 extra pints on match days than we sell on a normal day.

"It has been really exciting, Tuesday's game was magic, my husband was running round the pub with everyone in celebration."

And as the England squad gears up to play Sweden today at 3pm in the quarter finals she says her loyal staff are ready to meet punters demands.

Mrs Geering said: "Our staff work really hard and I am very fortunate to be a manager here.

"I think the England team will beat Sweden 2-1 - maybe its our year."

The Oxford Street pub is not the only Furness venue planning to show today's game.

The Sun in Ulverston is also busy preparing for the game, which falls on the same day as the town's carnival.

Barmaid Abby Green said: "We show the football on a screen in the beer garden, and we usually get a couple hundred people in, especially with Ulverston carnival being on the same day.

"I am not a football fan, and I think we might lose this one."

Cloud Nine and The Lounge has also become a Barrow favourite venue amongst football watching punters.

Simon Crompton, Cloud 9 and The Lounge manager, said: "Trade is challenging during the football season, but sales have increased exponentially.

"I would also like to say thank you to the police.

"It is good to see the police interact with the crowd, it is the way policing should be done - both sides are a credit to themselves.

"The crowds have grown week on week - it is really exciting, everyone enjoys themselves and everyone is welcome.

"I really think that this is the best chance England have had for a long time - I think its coming home."

After Tuesday's tense match against Colombia which ended in penalties, England fans everywhere have taken to social media to praise England manager Gareth Southgate for consoling a player who missed a penalty.

Southgate, who felt the pain of missing a penalty against Germany in Euro 96, was photographed consoling devastated Colombian midfielder, Mateus Uribe.

The hashtag "GarethSouthgateWould" has since circulated on social media, with many users posting comical saint-like deeds that Southgate would carry out.

Furness residents posted on The Mail 's Facebook page with some of their #GarethSouthgateWould ideas:

Bethany Hall-Fletcher said: "#GarethSouthgateWould give you his last cigarette out of his twenty pack and tell you 'not to worry about it'."

Mark Curwen said: "#GarethSouthgateWould lend you his charger even though he only had four per cent battery himself."

Daniel Hammond said: "#GarethSouthgateWould say thank you to you after he opened the door for you."

And Dave Morgan said: "#GarethSouthgateWould give you his drink after you spilt yours down his new Dolce and Gabbana pants."
