POLICE in Ulverston are asking for help to identify a group of teenagers who vandalised cars on the same day as a popular weekend festival of music and comedy.

Around 20 youths are wanted for kicking off the wing mirrors of ten cars in the Ford Park area of Ulverston at 11.15pm on the same day that the town was praised for a successful Another Fine Fest.

The teens are thought to be aged between 15 and 16.

Sergeant Rupert Johnston, who is leading the inquiry, said: "We have got a couple of names of those who we think were involved but we are just trying to find the others who were responsible.

"This is a very disappointing end to what was a very successful weekend."

Dave Crossley, who is responsible for organising Saturday's extravaganza, was upset to hear about the vandalism but didn't want it to undermine the festival.

He said: "It's the first I've heard of it and I'm devastated to hear about that because, as far as I know, the event passed without any trouble, fighting or vandalism, so to hear that is gutting.

"I think it was extremely well run and we had lots of stewards involved to make it a family-friendly event.

"Unfortunately, we can't stop the mindless idiots who do this but we don't want it to be attributed to this festival."

Kirsty Mackenzie is the landlady of the Sun Inn, a pub which hosted live music to punters across the day.

She thinks that the vandalism shouldn't be linked to the festival which drew in thousands of people from across the country.

"I think it's unrelated," she said.

"The festival took place in the middle of the town so there is no reason for the vandalism to be related to it.

"We had no trouble throughout the day and not a single person stepped out of line."

Anyone who has any information on the offenders should call 101 and leave a message for PC1730.
