CUMBRIA police have been out in force to make people more aware about the law on booster seats.

A new law is set to come into force to ban younger children from using backless booster seats.

The new rules, which were due to come into force today, have been delayed until March next year but Cumbria Police have taken the opportunity to get parents up to speed with the changes.

PC Laura Stewart has been leading the operation which has seen officers stopping and speaking to drivers.

The scheme, which took place yesterday, also saw officers handing out leaflets to help make people more aware about the change to the law.

PC Stewart said: “It is very important that parents fully understand the current laws regarding booster seats so that they don’t fall foul of the law and, most importantly, they are able to keep their children as safe as possible.

“The operation was a great opportunity for officers to make parents aware of the changes.”

The law as it stands means parents can use backless booster seats for children who weigh 15kg and above - typically ages three and over.

However, the new rules will mean only children weighing more than 22kg who are also more than 125 (four foot four inches) can use the seats.

Safety experts recommend that you use a child car seat for all children under 150cm (4ft 11in).

Children under three must be in a child car seat.

Anyone found breaking the law could face a £500 fine.
