POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a crash which left a pensioner in an induced coma after becoming trapped under a car.

Greengate Street, in Barrow, was closed for several hours in both directions on Friday lunchtime following the crash.

An 85-year-old woman was released from under the car by firefighters from Walney and Barrow crews who attended the scene along with the North West Air Ambulance, Great North Air Ambulance and police.

The woman was put into an induced coma by Great North Air Ambulance paramedic and doctor team before being taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by road.

She arrived at the hospital in a serious, but stable, condition.

The collision happened between the junctions with School Street and Allison Street.

The incident involved a Peugeot 206 which was driven by a 30-year-old Barrow woman, who is not believed to be injured.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact PC 1639 Wilson on 101.
