PICTURES have been posted online showing some impressive pieces of metal fabrication destined for the shipyard in Barrow.
The huge circular red jigs made by Newcastle-based firm WD Close have been loaded onto a large vessel ready to be shipped to Barrow docks.
Jigs are custom-made fabrications used by the shipyard to both hold sections of a submarine in place and to safely position the section or tools while other elements are added or constructed.
A number of jigs and heavy loads have been transported to the shipyard in Barrow in recent months, as construction of the remaining Astute-class submarines boats continues. The movement of the jigs from the docks to the yard often results in short road closures.
