THIS is the paedophile who was discovered to be renting a room from a Barrow grandmother.

The landlady, called Helen, has rented out a furnished room to 62-year-old Alan Smith since July. Helen rents out a number of rooms to individuals at her property in Ramsden Street in Barrow.

But this morning, Helen made the shocking discovery of realising her tenant was in fact a convicted paedophile who had been deported from Thailand after securing teaching positions there.

An article in today's Sun revealed Smith has since twice changed his name in a bid to return to the Asian country.

Smith, an ex-Butlin’s redcoat, was jailed for six months in 2005 and placed on the sex offenders’ register for a sex attack on a girl of 14.

He pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child after an incident in the kitchen of a pub where he worked in 2005. He admitted pulling the girl's knickers from under her trousers and touching her on the back.

Smith, who acted as Accrington Stanley's mascot Stan the Monkey before his conviction, was in 2007 found to be teaching English at the Nongyai temple school set in the grounds of a Buddhist monastery 20 miles north of Bangkok. He was deported in 2008.

Smith had changed his name twice by deed poll and applied for new passports in the names Allan Howson-Burton and Alan Trevor Stewart.

It was under the name Allan Howson-Burton that he secured the tenancy at Helen's Barrow property.

"He kept to himself mostly," Helen told the Evening Mail.

"I'm absolutely horrified. I feel contaminated. I want to burn all the furniture."

Helen is furious that she had not been informed about her tenant's convictions. Her two granddaughters, aged two and four, regularly visit her home.

"I've had to tell my daughter not to bring them around any more," she said.

"Surely I have a right to know who he is? Why did the police let him live somewhere where he might have contact with children. I feel physically sick."

Helen told us Smith moved into her home on July 2, having left a room at the Vic Tavern in Oxford Street.

She added: "The last I saw of him was this morning; he said he was going to town.

"We didn't have a lot to do with him, he spent most of his time in his room.

"He won't be living here anymore. We've packed up his room and he's out. I want people to know we knew nothing about this and he won't be here anymore."

Police in Barrow have been made aware of Helen's concerns.
