POLICE are continuing to hunt for the owner of a dog which carried out a vicious and sustained attack on a golden retriever in the street in Barrow.

Joan Casaru was walking her elderly dog Bailey in Oxford Street last Tuesday when "out of nowhere" a snarling and vicious Staffie-type dog appeared and launched itself at Bailey.

It took up to four men three attempts to pull the attacking dog from 12-year-old Bailey, who suffered a number of puncture wounds.

The police were called and the Staffie-type dog was seized and later taken to police-approved kennels where it now faces being destroyed following the attack.

Bailey continues to make a recovery while police are still looking for the owner of the Staffie-type dog, described as light-coloured.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria police said: "The owner of the dog involved in the incident on Oxford Street has not yet made themselves known. The dog remains in secure kennels and police are still investigating."

Anyone who has information or who knows the identity of the dog's owner(s) is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
