A string of high powered guests and speakers came to Barrow today to hear about the opportunities available in the town.

Hosted by Rovtech Solutions, based on Andrews Court, and organised by the Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster (BECBC), over 60 individuals representing all aspects of the nuclear industry attended the event designed to showcase the world-leading work being developed in Barrow.

The event was the first organised by the BECBC, which is based at Lilyhall in Whitehaven, to be held in the Barrow.

Representatives from Sellafield, Choose Cumbria and Rovtech Solutions led talks about the work they are doing to boost innovation as well as highlighting the range of industries operating in the town and across Cumbria.

Names from Amec Foster Wheeler, the National Nuclear Laboratory, VINCI Technology and Forth Engineering all packed into the Rovtech boardroom to hear about what the speakers had to say.

Event chair and stakeholder relations director for BECBC, John Grainger, said: “Here today, we’ve had the inaugural event in Barrow at Rovtech, which has brought together over 60 people across a wide variety of people in different business sectors, from SMEs to tier one.

“We’ve been enthusiastically received and we have worked with Furness Economic Development Forum to help make this to happen and we hope it’s going to be the first of several opportunities where we can present business opportunities to the private sector here.”

General manager of Rovtech Solutions, Steve Phelps, said: “The event has gone really well, we’re not surprised at the turnout but we’re glad that we managed to get as many people down here to Barrow as they do up the coast.

“It can be harder getting people to Barrow, because the supply chain is really for Sellafield.

“It’s the first BECBC meeting in south Cumbria and it gives us the chance to speak to a wide audience and businesses that we don’t usually get to speak to in normal day to day working.”
