CONFESSIONS of a convicted killer who brought terror to the streets of Northern Ireland will form part of a special event in Barrow next month.

The week-long Believe in Barrow will throw the spotlight on a number of high profile guests who will show how they have turned their lives around and how religion has helped them to achieve their goals.

As well as a string of special guest 'Parkinson-style' interview sessions, community barbecues, film nights and kids parties will also take place.

Rugby League star Jamie Jones-Buchanan, illusionist Todd Alexander and Olympic rower Debbie Flood are among the names set to appear at a series of events being held at Craven Park and The Forum from September 11 to 17.

Former Ulster Volunteer Force terrorist David Hamilton who spent 12 years in the notorious Maze prison, will talk about his life of violence and crime after joining the paramilitary group as a teenager to fight the IRA.

He was repeatedly shot, orchestrated bombings and bank robberies, and brought terror to the streets of Northern Ireland.

But after spending years in jail, the convicted killer has turned his back on his old life and now works as a pastor in England.

Others set to feature at the Believe in Barrow event, which last took place in 2015, include up-and-coming Australian singer-songwriter Liv Chapman, comedian-guitarist Paul Bell and former Chief Constable Robin Oake whose son PC Stephen Oake was stabbed to death during an anti-terror raid in Manchester in 2003.

Believe in Barrow has been orchestrated by 18 local churches working together.

Reverend Robin Ham, chairman of the organising committee, said the series of events were open to everyone.

"Whether or not you'd say you have a faith, we really hope everyone will find something for them during Real Lives," he said.

"After all, everyone loves a good story and there's going to be some really interesting stories during the week.

"Believe in Barrow arose out of the conviction that Christianity is good news and should make a real difference in our lives.

"And these stories touch on some very real issues for all of us: How can you forgive the unforgivable? What difference does God actually make in the face of tragedy? Is there more to life than success and reaching the pinnacle of your career? How does someone set on terror and hate get their life turned around?"
