THE MP for Barrow has described the appointment of a new shipyard boss as "concerning news", but has moved to reassure the community over the security of the town's shipbuilding future.

It comes following today's announcement that a new managing director has been appointed at BAE Systems in Barrow.

Cliff Robson has been appointed as Managing Director Submarines.

Mr Robson, who has been on secondment at Rolls Royce, takes up the role vacated by previous managing director Will Blamey, who has left his position to pursue other interests.

A BAE spokesperson said this afternoon: "We can confirm that Will Blamey has left his position as MD Submarines in BAE Systems.

“His successor Cliff Robson has held a number of senior positions in BAE Systems, most recently as Senior Vice President of the F-35 programme, and is currently on secondment to Rolls Royce.

"Cliff will bring considerable business leadership expertise and a wealth of experience in manufacturing and operations to the submarines business.

“BAE Systems remains committed to working with the MoD to ensure the delivery of both the Astute and Dreadnought programmes.”

Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock said he was this morning briefed about the change by John Hudson, managing director at BAE Systems Maritime.

Mr Woodcock said: “This is obviously concerning news which will inevitably place a spotlight on difficulties the company is having in delivering the Astute programme on time and to budget. I wish Will Blamey well and welcome Cliff Robson, who I will be seeking to meet soon to discuss the challenges the shipyard faces.

“People will inevitably have questions in the light of Mr Blamey’s departure, but it is important we all understand that Barrow’s future remains secure. Our community is delivering Astute and Dreadnought on behalf of the nation with jobs guaranteed into the 2030s.”

Mr Robson is set to officially start in his new role on Monday, January 8.
