NEIGHBOURS were shocked after a car was smashed up in a hit-and-run on a Barrow residential street just inches from where children usually play.

A parked Peugeot 206 car was ploughed into on Anson Street, Barrow, before 4pm today.

Neighbours said it is lucky that children were not out playing at the time as they 'could have been killed'.

Householders in Anson Street and other Hindpool streets heard the bang and some said they saw the car that caused the damage, describing it as a silver coloured Ford. It is understood that the car had also been involved in a collision with another vehicle further up the street just before hitting the Peugeot 206.

Cumbria police have said they are investigating the collisions.

The owner of the vehicle, who was visiting her mother at the time, said: "I'm gutted about the damage, but it's really lucky that there were not kids out at the time because they could have killed them. It's a busy street with lots of kids."

A mum who lives on Anson Street said: "I came out and saw the mess.

"People come flying down this street in cars, it's bad.

"It's lucky that the kids were not out playing because they could have been hit and they could have been killed."
