Munich massacre gunman who killed nine was teenager acting alone, police say


A gunman who murdered nine people and injured 16 others including children at a Munich shopping centre was an 18-year-old German-Iranian, police believe.

Three people remain in a critical condition after the teenager, who has not been named, opened fire in a McDonald's before rampaging through the nearby Olympia-Einkaufszentrum mall on Friday evening.

Police said the victims killed in the massacre included adolescents, while there are children among the 16 people injured.

Corbyn to rally Labour activists at leadership campaign launch


Jeremy Corbyn is to rally his supporters with a call for a new wave of grassroots activism to propel Labour to victory at the next general election.

Speaking at the public launch of his campaign to retain the party leadership in Manchester, he will tell activists "victories are not won in Parliament alone".

While he will acknowledge that Labour has "a mountain to climb" if it is to regain power in the general election, he will say that campaigning as a "social movement" will be the key victory.

Review of Sir Philip Green's knighthood after BHS collapse


Former BHS boss Sir Philip Green's knighthood is being reviewed in the wake of the store chain's collapse, it has been disclosed.

A Cabinet Office official has written to the Labour MP Jim McMahon confirming that the case was under consideration.

Mr McMahon was among a group of MPs who wrote to the Honours Forfeiture Committee calling for Sir Philip to be stripped of his knighthood amid criticism of the way he sold BHS to Dominic Chappell, a former bankrupt with no retail experience.

Average first-time buyer deposit 'more than doubled' since 2007


The average deposit for a home being put down by a first-time buyer has more than doubled since 2007, a report has found.

Someone getting on the property ladder in May 2016 needed to put down £33,960 typically as a deposit - compared with an average deposit size of £16,400 in 2007, Halifax found.

In London, an aspiring first-time buyer now needs to save £95,693 on average just for a deposit.

<strong>1.4m choose UK holiday to be with dog - survey</strong>


An estimated 1.4 million people will stay in the UK for a holiday this year so they can take their dog with them, according to a new study.

A survey found that eight per cent of holidaymakers planning a domestic break in 2016 are doing so because they do not want to be away from their dog.

This is twice as many who are choosing this option in order to watch the Olympic Games, which accounted for just four per cent.

<strong>Clinton chooses Tim Kaine to be Democratic running mate</strong>


Hillary Clinton named Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her vice presidential running mate, adding a centrist former governor of a crucial battleground state to the Democratic ticket.

In a text message to supporters, the presumptive Democratic nominee said: "I'm thrilled to tell you this first: I've chosen Sen. Tim Kaine as my running mate."

On Twitter a few seconds later, Mrs Clinton described Mr Kaine as "a man who's devoted his life to fighting for others".
