A TEENAGE boy and his mum have been congratulated by members of the public after finding a soldier's lost medal.

Vicky Pedley, of Hawcoat Lane in Barrow, was driving along Duke Street with her son when she spotted something glinting in the road.

Hundreds of people across Barrow responded to an appeal from the police earlier this week to reunite a serving soldier with the medal that was lost during Tuesday's Duke of Lancaster's Regiment parade.

Mrs Pedley's son, Ben, saw the social media appeal for the return of the lost medal and told his mother, who suddenly saw something sparkle in the middle of the road near to Murray's Chemist.

She said: "I'd gone to pick him up and he mentioned that a soldier had lost his medal.

"We were in the car and as we drove past I saw something sparkling in the road, so I turned back round the roundabout and stopped."

The pair then went straight to Barrow police station and handed in the medal.

Mrs Pedley said the police were very grateful that they had found the medal, an outcome hundreds of people across the area were hoping for.

The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment also spoke of their gratitude on social media, tweeting: "A huge thank you to whoever found and handed in the medal."

Tuesday's parade was a grand day for Barrow as soldiers marched through the streets to the cheers of proud residents, who were waving their flags and singing.

However, as the soldier's heartbreaking story broke, people did their best to spread the word and make as many people aware of the loss as possible.

As social media sites helped tell the tale, fortune undoubtedly played a part to help reunite this brave man with this prized possession.

Describing the find as a stroke of luck, Mrs Pedley couldn't believe what she saw when her son mentioned the lost medal.

She said: "If he hadn't have told me about it, I might not have noticed but I just saw it glinting in the road."
