A SPEED camera on a main road in Barrow has been flashing motorists driving within the speed limit.

The eastbound speed camera in Salthouse Road has been flashing drivers for a number of days, despite motorists sticking to the road's 30mph limit.

A number of motorists have contacted police about the camera, amid concerns they could be issued a speeding ticket.

Some have taken to the Evening Mail's Facebook page to share their frustrations, after we were alerted to the problem by one Barrow motorist.

Hannah McCracken said: "It's gone off a few times when I've gone past it usually at night and I've always been going between 20-30 so under the limit and haven't had a ticket."

The same happened to Nicole Henry, who said: "It flashed at me last year and I didn't get a ticket. I was only doing about 28mph."

Sean Corr, who originally reported the issue, said: "Happened to me around 6.30ish tonight... and I was doing around 25mph. So I'm glad I'm not the only one who got flashed!"

Meanwhile, Tim Woodburn claimed the only other speed cameras in South Cumbria, on the A590 near Levens, were also known to malfunction.

He said: "The ones near Witherslack do it regularly."

A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "Police have been alerted to a malfunction with a speed camera on Salthouse Road in Barrow.

"Attempts are being made to temporarily switch off the camera in order for repairs to be conducted. No tickets will be issued whilst the camera is suffering from a malfunction.

"We ask that motorists remain patient whilst we resolve this issue and that they drive safely."

This isn't the first time the Salthouse Road speed camera has targeted law-abiding motorists.

Back in 2015, the camera started to flash repeatedly, leading to engineers being called out to fix the faulty snapper.

The two cameras in Salthouse Road, one on each side of the road, have been in operation for a decade, having been activated in autumn 2005.

The devices cost £45,000 each and are the only permanent speed cameras in Barrow.
