A MOTORIST is due to appear in court after a teenager was knocked down by a car in Barrow.

Bridgegate Avenue was closed on the evening of October 3 by police following a collision involving a car and a pedestrian.

At least four police vehicles and paramedics were called to the junction close to Lesh Lane at around 7.15pm after a pedestrian was hit by a red Kia Rio being driven by a 21-year-old man from Broughton.

The pedestrian, an 18-year-old woman from Barrow, suffered head and leg injuries and was comforted at the side of the road by witnesses while emergency services arrived at the scene. On arrival, police officers had to pull the woman from underneath the car.

She was later transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital where her injuries were described as critical.

The pedestrian was taken to Furness General Hospital but she was later transferred to Royal Preston Hospital where her condition was described as critical but stable.

Bridgegate Avenue was closed while police carried out tests to determine the condition of the road and it reopened the day after the crash at around 1.30pm.

Corin Joseph Thompson, 21, of High Kepplewray, in Broughton, has been charged with driving without due care and attention in connection with the collision and is due to appear at Furness Magistrates' Court on Thursday.
