The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Tuesday and Wednesday for Cumbria, with more heavy rain forecast starting from late on Monday night.

The Met Office's chief forecaster said: "Two further frontal systems are expected to run eastwards across the country during Monday night and through Tuesday. These will contain very moist tropical air and are likely to lead to further bouts of persistent and, at times, heavy rain. Totals of 20 to 40 mm are possible over the high ground of NW Wales and NW England with peak values of 60 mm over the most exposed sites.

"Some uncertainties remain over the northern extent of the higher rainfall amounts, as well as the timings of the more intense spells of rain. The warning will therefore be kept under review but with this rainfall falling onto already saturated ground some significant impacts are possible."

A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council said: "Our highways staff have been working through the night to help get the county's roads open. Twelve crews plus support have been focused on clearing debris from the roads caused by flooding. There have been fallen trees due to the high winds as well as material washed onto the roads by water running off fells and fields. Clearance work will continue through the day with several roads still closed. While the rain may have stopped drivers still need to take care on the roads today."
