GUESTS attending a charity art auction have helped raise more than £4,000 for a troubled bus service by bidding generously for prestigious pieces.

Friends of the X112 member and organiser Barbara Harris curated items from across the country and even persuaded famous sculptor Sir Anthony Gormley to donate a piece for auction.

Reflections 6 was sold by Sotheby's London, smashing its reserve of £1,500.

Made using crude oil on paper, the small, minimalist piece was sold for £2,500, almost doubling the efforts from a local sale which took place at the Fisherman's Arms in Baycliff at the weekend.

Mrs Harris said: "It was a lovely atmosphere and the pub was amazing and gave us a tea and coffee station.

"We are so happy with the results."

Barbara and her husband Roger have been instrumental in planning events which aim to raise money for the Barrow to Coniston service run by Blueworks Taxis Ltd.

After the council cut bus subsidies to providers, the service has continued to struggle, but campaigners say it is a vital tool for many elderly residents living along its route.

Mrs Harris added: "Without the bus, many people would be stuck and unable to see their relatives.

"We heard it was either scrap the bus or close a care home but, to me, this is as important as a care home.

"People are even wanting to move away for fear they won't be able to get out - it's an absolute lifeline."

Pieces by artists like Jo McGrath sold for impressive price tags and the event made £1,350.

Several pieces which weren't sold will be photographed and placed online for potential nationwide buyers to browse.

A valuable oil painting by Lucy Cavendish which did not sell will be taken to a specialist who will put it on the market.

The friends of the X112 will have their next meeting on Thursday November 4 in Ulverston's Coronation Hall, where they will discuss their next fundraising event.

Previous efforts have included a Hairy Biker endorsed local cook book and a sponsored walk.
