OPHELIA took the area by storm last night (16), leaving behind a trail of wreckage for many to clean up.

New pictures show serious damage to the roof of Barrow AFC's stadium, as the club pledged to press on with plans for their next home game.

Cumbria police and other emergency services dealt with numerous incidents relating to the high winds - one of the more serious ones being the roof of Barrow AFC's Brian Arrowsmith stand being ripped off by the ex-hurricane.

Part of the roof blew off and into Wilkie Road, which remained closed for much of today while clean-up operations took place.

The club is hoping to secure the stand in time for the next home game on Saturday October 28.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: "We were well prepared yesterday (16) and that paid off. The clean-up will continue through the day so there is likely to be some local disruption. Please give yourself extra times for journeys just in case and look out for further updates via our social media feeds.”

Winds reached up to 70mph last night and there have been many reports of trees down, roofs and debris in the roads and overhead cables down as well as properties losing power.

Many properties across south Cumbria are still without power. Ulverston has been hit particularly badly, at 1pm today 271 properties still had no power.

The storm forced Captain Shaw's CE School in Bootle to close when it was left with no power. The school closed at noon and is due to reopen tomorrow.

Ophelia may have left our area. However, wet and windy weather is expected to return over the weekend.

Friday and Saturday will see heavy wind and rain sweep the area. Some areas could be issued with weather warnings.

The Met Office has stressed the importance of keeping an eye on the weather forecast because things can change quickly and dramatically.

Dramatic changes in weather are something residents in Millom were the victim of at the end of last month when they experienced flash flooding. The clean-up operations from this continued into this month.
