MEDICAL research in south Cumbria is set to be given a boost by the recruitment of a high-profile expert.

Margaret Cooper has joined the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, the organisation which runs Furness General Hospital, as research and development lead. Her role will be to raise the profile of clinical trials being carried out by the trust, and improve the experiences of patients who take part.

She said: “We have around 100 active clinical trials and my mission is to encourage staff to approach patients about the possibility of participating in one. Also I would like patients to ask staff about any clinical trials that may be beneficial to them. After all, today’s research is tomorrow’s patient care.”
